HOLDING OUT TO BE A PSYCHOLOGIST

Section 7 of the Psychologists Act 2001 makes it an offence for a person who is not a registered psychologists to indicate that the person practises psychology or is qualified to practise psychology. A person is taken to have so indicated if the person uses:

1. any name, initials, word, title, symbol or description that (having regard to the circumstances in which it is taken or used):

     i) indicates; or
    ii) is capable of being understood to indicate; or
   iii) is calculated to lead a person to infer,

that the person practises psychology or is qualified to practise psychology; or

2. any name, title or description prescribed by the regulations

The Board receives information from members of the public regularly regarding persons who appear to be breaching the above provisions of the Act. Any such conduct should be reported to the Registrar of the Board.
